THE TRUE COST OF FASHION | A NOTE

In a world dominated by fast fashion and mass-produced items at low prices,  it’s easy to forget the real value of clothing. Learning to make clothing has allowed me to understand the impacts of fast fashion- on workers, the environment, and our own expectations of how much we should pay for clothing.

Let’s keep in mind that for the production of a single piece of clothing, there are many steps involved:

Textile production

X Growing & Harvesting fiber or making filament for fabric
X Combing and spinning fibers to yarn
X Weaving or knitting yarn/filament into textiles.
X Treating and/or dyeing the fabric.

Design and Garment Production

X Design and Pattern Making.
X Grading Patterns (Creating different sizes).
X Samples and fittings.
X Sourcing and Purchasing Materials.
X Fabric Spreading and Cutting.
X Sewing and Assembly.
X Quality Control and Inspection.
X Pressing and Finishing.
X Pre-Shipping Inspection.
X Packaging, and Shipping.

So if you spend 10$ on a t-shirt, don't forget all the people who might’ve been involved in the production.
